Chord Changes? Learn with your eyes CLOSED!
WE DON'T PLAY GUITAR WITH OUR EYES - We play with our hands.
Yes, we all look at our fretboard from time to time, but to do so can both spoil your posture, and delay the change ruining the rhythm.
We need to form "muscle memory" of how our hands change chords, and this is what I recommend.
I'm using the I,IV 7 V progressions in G and C , then I'm adding in another chord which comes from the 6th note in the scale - which is A minor!
In the key of C - 6th chord is Em, (count them from the scale).
This is one of my little videos about aspects of playing that I see many of my "ONE-TO-ONE Zoom" clients find challenging.
If you would like one-to-one help playing acoustic steel string guitar -the...

CAGED - Andy's explanation

Hi, this, I know is one of many videos about this, and I did one some time ago, but I do know that this is useful to most to understand how these five basic chord SHAPES can be found and used up and down the fretboard. I've use my 2007 Eastman AR805 Archtop because I don't have many14 fretters. Lessons ? ONE-to-ONE hour long lessons via Zoom? Yup, Chipickers2016@gmail for details
The "thumb-over" F major chord
Просмотров 1,6 тыс.14 дней назад
Hi, this is one of a few issues, that I have seen arising when teaching folks in my One-To-One Zoom sessions. The Barre chord is the traditional method but it is not ideal for steel string rhythm accompaniment, especially when changing from first position C or G shapes. NOTE: the length of your thumb or fingers does NOT restrict this fretting method. It is really a matter of learning how to pla...

    It depends in the construction and materials. I have several guitars but amongst them is a Martin 0 - 28 12 fret, it’s a tiny guitar yet sounds not only full bodied but also open and articulate. This is no doubt due to its construction using premium tone woods through out and animal glue on the other hand I have fender parlour 00 size that’s made with solid woods that sounds a bit “shut in “ and boxy of course the Martin is hand made and approx 10 times the price of the fender but the fact remains that not all small guitars are boxy.

    I just thought of another reason I don't look at the fretting hand: I keep looking out at my audience to see they are safe and sitting. Playing in an assisted living, memory care, or nursing home requires the residents to sit. That is why I sit. Some may get up without their walkers, and that's not safe. If I stand and call them by name, I can usually get them to sit before the nurse can get there. For that reason, I always wear a strap.Thanks Andy, for my new warm-up progression. I c an play these, while talking to them while gathering.

    Hi Andy, I remember Guitarist magazine doing a review of the DS2H back in the 90’s I think it was, I might still have the edition somewhere in the loft or garage. I had a hankering for one after reading the article but as you know they’re not as abundant as the D2H dreadnought. I was wondering what light gauge (EJ 16’s) would sound and feel like, I know you prefer EJ17’s with light top strings but a comparison with a full set of lights would be very interesting if you have the time and inclination?

      Hi, I have a copy of that article. That one, and mine (the first shipment of new Collings into the UK ??) I believe that they had corresponding serial numbers. I believe that the sales guy that sold it to me ended up buying the other one. As it happens, I tried EJ16s on my 2003 DS1 recently and played it (in public!) last night. I did this because I'm having hand issues at present. It was a tad easier to play of course, and a little less strident. I'll be restringing it soon with XS mediums like I've done on my two other Collings dreads. BTW I stopped putting light 1st and 2nd strings on ages ago. Thanks for watching.

    I used a Shubb for many years but switched to Thalia - mostly because they look stunning. The early generation didn't work with my Rainsong 12-string but the newer models use a rubber pad and work fine with my 6 & 8 string Taylors and my Rainsong-12. I still use my 3-string Shubb capo which allows for instant switching between standard DGCFAD and DADGAD. Sweetened tuning - I've used a James Taylor version that I came across - 6th -12 cents, 5th -10 cents, 4th -8 cents, 3rd -4 cents, 2nd -6 cents, 1st -3 cents. It became too much hassle when I got a Peterson clip-on. Your trick of tuning with a G shape is interesting. It triggered a memory of me doing something when a student - 40-odd years ago.

      Hi, I bought this guitar in 2006. I was awaiting heart surgery, and asked thee seller if he would hold it for me 2in case" I didn't make it. Surprisingly, He kept it aside for me until I contacted him again to say I was still alive. When I contacted him again, he offered to bring it to me - nearly three hundred miles - for free. Lovely, kind chap who had a room full of Harmonys and Stellas which he was seloling off to help his daughter. I don't play it much but I like the feel. Thanks for watching

    In an update, I just got a 2nd hand Collings SJ rosewood and it's amazing.

      Well caught. I'd kinda like one myself, but I'd need to buy a bigger house first!

    Collings has the right mids. Eastman sounds like it has a newer set of strings maybe.

      Hi, no, I just checked, both had D'addario PB light gauge XS strings. both put on the same day about 12 days earlier. I must say that I suspect that the Collings bought in October '23 has not been used for some time by the original seller.

    Good old Silly Moustache - I can't hear if you say is or isn't the warmest tonewood about the maple b&s. Best Thoughts

    • @SillyMoustache
      @SillyMoustache 15 дней назад

      Hi Ziraffe My apologies for my poor diction - god, didn't I ramble! In my humble opinion Rosewood is warmer (a little more bass?) than mahogany, which is more balanced, whereas Maple is neutral - resonating well, but having little "colouration" to the tone. It is most often used in violin family instruments and archtops, and mandolins, and has been for a very long time. Hope that help, Andy

      Thanx SMou ^ Warmest tonewood ? 3:58 is still unclear, but apart from that your observations are followed. Like your films. Acually saw this before some years ago and the 'opening up phenomenon' remains an intriguing riddle. So does the ear/woods dillemma. Just remember that guitars DO change - and that you can check your psycho-sonic-perception simply by taking another guit or 2 and sense what they tell compared to the doubt-maker. Hope you heard yourself some decent folk-music back then. It would have been possible. And the city-vibe wasn't all bad in that decade. Hi

    F is easier with the thumb, but what about bm?

    • @SillyMoustache
      @SillyMoustache 15 дней назад

      Ah ! and there's the rub. I only use Bm as a VI chord when playing in G so I confess, I don't use the barre version!

      We must all find our own way. It has been suggested that I can only use one finger because I am left handed, so my picking hand is less nimble than my left.

    I recall a video from last year or older where you grab a guitar from its stand with the thumb over grip! Since that video i scrapped barre shape F for this.
